Synopsis: A tension-building, siren-esque call emerges from layered pipe organ tones, field recordings and audio from the Ocean Networks of Canada hydrophone archive, specifically blue whales from the Cascadia Basin, and an unspecified dolphin pod. Channeling unease and raising alarms with calls to and from the sea.

Wavefield 2025: DIY Oscillator Workshop

Join Holophon’s Cam Wiest in a beginner-friendly workshop that shares &
celebrates the wonder of building your own voltage controlled, noise-making oscillator!

The workshop starts 10am on Saturday September 27 at the Saskatchewan Science Center.

The fee is $20 per person. Maximum of 10 participants. Financial aid available.

Using a common hex-inverter based design, participants will build a hackable oscillator and learn about electronic oscillation as an audio source. This workshop is leveled for beginners and will help participants develop their ability to:

  • Read a schematic

  • Understand basic features of a datasheet

  • Solder through-hole components

  • Apply voltage control concepts to other DIY / hacker-friendly projects.

Wavefield 2025 will be debuting the newest version of Wiest’s board design: expanding on last year’s development, 2025’s edition of the oscillator features a rudimentary implementation of voltage control - a common feature of analog synthesizers - intended to be driven by PWM signals commonly generated by microcontrollers from platforms like Arduino or ESP32.

No experience necessary. The workshop will take approximately 2 to 3 hours depending on experience and unforeseen technical difficulties.
